A Niche For All: A Review Of The EMS Market For Providers With Annual Revenue Below $250 Million

Published 2006-1 by Charles W. Wade
About this Report

In the global Electronic Manufacturing Services (EMS) market, we constantly hear news of the major ("Big 6") players-Foxconn, Flextronics, Sanmina-SCI, Solectron, Celestica, Jabil-as well as others. But what about the remainder of this market? The portion served by those EMS companies with revenues less than $250 million approaches $10 billion annually and is distributed among approximately 2,000 global service companies. What does the future hold for these smaller industry participants? Will they survive? Will they be gobbled up by the bigger fish? A Tool for Assessing EMS' Performance

Published 2004-2 by Niti Agrawal
About this Report

Niti Agrawal outlines the methodology used in her annual TFI Industry Productivity Benchmarking study, presented in Q2 of each year for Quarterly Forum members. This 2004 research study is based on 2003 financial data from major EMS companies. The year 2003 showed signs of a recovery in both the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and electronics manufacturing services (EMS) industry sectors. After two years of severe declines in the EMS industry, 2003 yielded a growth in revenues for the industry as a whole. While the industry is still below the high growth rates of more than a 20% per annum from 1993 until 2001, it has recovered from the declines experienced in 2001 and 2002. This annual research report analyzing a dozen financial and productivity ratios for four size categories of contract manufacturers helps EMS and ODM companies to benchmark their companies against others and informs OEM customers of levels of operational efficiencies to expect from their suppliers. In this report, for the first time, we compare and contrast ODMs' productivity ratios with those of EMS companies.
